4r70W 2wd and 4wd differences

I have a 97 F150 2wd that was a 4.2L V6, and got an EFI 5.0 swap done in it last fall.

I am seriously considering converting over to 4wd now, and doing a straight axle. Im not going to "Just go buy a 4wd truck" because with the rest of the things done to my truck its resale isnt crap so I would basically have to shell out almost all the money to get to the starting point of a stock truck then remod...

Anyhow, my trans(4r70w) is a 50K old factory reman unit. I understand that the NP205 can be made to fit the 4R70W, but I need to find out what else I need to change on the trans for this to work. Obviously the tailshaft housing will need to be changed out to an extension shaft housing, but will I also need to replace the output shaft? If so, do you have to totally tear down the tranny to change that out? My buddy said its one of the first things that goes in the tranny...

Your buddy is right. The output shafts are different. When you tear down a trans the last part to come out is the output shaft. It's the first part to install on the rebuild.

I went from 4X4 to 2WD and have the longer tail shaft and housing out in my shed.
Let me know if you need it.
The trans will have to be torn down so it might be cheaper for you to find a 4X4 tranny to put in.

Do 2x4 trucks have coil springs in front? If so I think you would need to get the entire front end of a 4x4 truck as they have torsion springs and are completely different. Or do a solid axle swap.

Driveline is also going to need to be shortened. One more thing is that your truck has an 8.8 rear end- the 5.0l is likely to blow up that diff. I would find a 9.75 from a junkyard and throw that in as well.

Thanks guys. I'm still trying to get my arms around this thing..

Theres some yards here that have some Explorer 4r70w's that were in AWD applications for 3-400$.. The crappy thing is that I will be just using it as a core though. I'd be interested to know what you want for that extension housing and tailshaft thats out in your shed though. Heck, even curious what a great price on the jasper is, but dont think I want to go that far at this point just yet.

As for the other parts of the swap, I am going to look at a 79 Bronco donor today. From what i read, the NP205 in the Bronco is a direct swap into the 4r70W but the case needs trimmed for the shifter linkage. I'll also need to fab a cross member to support the weight of the case.

From there I am also planning on doing D44 front axle, with the radius rods and all. Track width of a bronco is the same, so Im hoping the axle will work out relatively easily. Im crossing my fingers and hoping the frame rail spacing is very similar between my 150 and the bronco and that I can simply bolt the radius rod brackets to my frame. I doubt I will be that lucky, but I can hope, haha.
