OK, I have a 1986 F150 Supercab Longbed 4.9L with the NP435 4spd 4x4 (I believe, it has the PTO hookup?). Anyway, I'm swappin my Engine out for another 86 4.9 (with 66,000 miles), and I figure since I am, I'll do the tranny swap too, from the 4 to the five, since I've been wanting to.
So here are my questions (some may sound dumb, but I dont know much about tranny work):
1. will I have to change to a different clutch? if so, what am I looking up a clutch for?
2. What year range can I pull the five speed out of? (The ZF)
3. What is your opinion about the ZF behind the 300?
4. What other parts am I looking at having to get?
I know there are several threads about a 5 speed swap, but I couldn't find any that were exactly satisfying.
your clutch should work fine but if you have a 10in clutch depending on what your using the truck for ie lots of towing you might want to go to the 11in while you have everything apart
the zf is a good trans i have one behind a 351 that came from behind a 300 i got it at a local you pull it for 75 bucks which i thought was a steal and the last time i was there they had 3 more but they are all 2wd trucks
im not sure what kind of clutch release an 86 truck uses but youll need hydralic and if your truck already has hydro you still might have to figure out a line to fit try to get the line with the donor trans it might work
also youll likly need to mod the drive shaft and maybe the xmember
