dont know about the compatible of the transmission are not but i doubt i would want it in their. the stick transmission that comes out of the 4.2 are weak and arent rated that much in the towing compartment.

ps even the auto is rated to tow more.

but with any imagination anything is possible.

If you are that intent on a stickshifter behind a 5.4L, grab a cheap reg cab 5.4L XL Super Duty.

I don't believe the 4.2L bolt pattern matches up with the gasser v8s, anyway.

There is the thought of dropping a 5.4L + ZF5 or ZF6 in an F-150, but that's a beast to fit under that trans tunnel and it's not exactly a sporty shift feel from my prior experience.

Is there any way to bolt up a TR3650 or a T-56 from a Mustang? I had some random thoughts of making my truck standard but most truck trannies shift like dog **** and are geared for towing with super low 1st gears.

no the 4.2 has a different bell than the 5.4

you would need to get a mazda from behind a 4.6 or a zf from behind the 5.4 or 6.8v10 i beleive both would hold up but of course the zf would hold up better to abuse and heavy towing although i had a mazda behind a 5.8 for about a year and towed with it almost every day and also beat on it raced it and it never broke but i know of others that havnt been so lucky now i have the zf for peice of mind and LOW 1st gear but i can still shift it pretty fast not quite as fast as a car but its still fun to drive

and yes a t56 or tko would work behind the 5.4 but you would need to figure out the hydraulics since the pre 05 mustangs were cable clutchs

The easiest swap would be a Mazda M5OD-R2 from a 4.6 truck. You will need the flywheel from a 4.6 WINDSOR engine as it has the 8 bold crank the same as the 5.4. Any year clutch for the 4.6 truck will fit the 8 bolt flywheel. If you restrict your search to the 1997-98 model years you will not have to change the shift control housing on the tranny. Ford changed the design in 99. They moved the shift lever back 55mm. If you find a newer tranny use the 4.2 shift control housing.

No kidding? How much power are they rated for? Is it an easy swap? I don't know if I'd do it on my truck..it may hurt the resale or value but I doubt I'm selling it anytime soon. I have a Magnacharger going on it this spring too.

What do you have for a shifter? Any interior pics?

ofcourse in most cases going from auto to maual will hurt the resale alittle unless you find the right buyer it can increase the value like if you had a supercharged f150 with a stick it would be a very rare truck

you can get a hurst short throw shifter for the mazda trans ive never driven one with it but ive read it greatly improves the shifting

the zf trans is rated to 420ftlb but ive read zf conservativly rates the trans by about 20%

i have no idea on the mazda but it was never put behind an engine with more that 280ftlb from the factory

although i would take the ratings with a grain of salt ive heard of trans holding up to WAYYYY more power than they were designed for and ive heard of trans blowing up way below there max tq rating

tq ratings should be based on how the vehicle is driven because you could bolt a 2000hp engine to a geo metro trans and it could hold up if driven conservativly

This is an early pic of when I first got the Hurst shifter. I have since modified it to move the lever slightly forward as it was too far back. I will try to dig up some more pics. I have not measured the hight of a ZF tranny as I do not foresee any problems with my install. I have a 3 inch body lift and I am positive that it can fit in the tunnel. I have broken numerous M5ODs with my 4.6 and 5.4. So far so good with the blower. I currently have a brand new 99 Model Year tranny in the truck.
