4R70W Rebuild

Can someone with resonable technical skills, good hands a shop manual rebuild a 4R70W transmission? Is press required or any special tools? Can band adjustments be done with applying hydraulic pressure?

Or do I just buy a HD rebuild unit?

Also, do I go with Red or Blue clutch pacs? Truck is 5.4 2wd with L/HD supercharger at 12lb of boost. Some towing done, other than that daily driver.

Well...

Maybe. If you do a most basic rebuild without taking the clutch drums apart you can get by without most of the specialty tools that you would normally need. But you will need something to measure the end clearances for the selective fit thrust washer on the pump and the intermediate stack height.

But asking about band adjustments on this transmission tells me that you need to do a little more research first. Once you do you will know what I am talking about. LOL

I also don't suggest either red or blue clutches. Stick with the factory stuff for best results.

Thanks! Manual is too long and hard to read to determine what to do and what to do. So I take it there is not bands like in the older trans??

So are we talking specialty tools like micrometers or Ford specific? Do you need a press?

Also, what color clutches should I go with Red or Blue?

Those will be brown for the reverse and forward and black for the intermediate and direct. You wil reuse the reverse band and get a new brown overdrive band. Again, use the Ford stuff.

You can get by without a press for just a quickie rebuild. But, I wouldn't suggest doing this.

Thanks!

OK, you convinced me. Don't like trans fluid any way.

So going with a factory rebuild appears to be the way to go!

Would really like a five speed

Now I didn't quite say that. I meant to use the factory style clutches if you wanted to do this yourself.

I do have a better idea though. Check your private messages

Instead of getting a rebuilt piece from Ford, look into getting yours rebuilt. Typically half the cost including labour and you can opt for heavier duty parts at a few bucks extra. I just had mine done, forward clutches were glazed and burning up, o/d was kaput, some springs were crap, plungers were worn allowing juice past them, o/d was what set things off when it quit. The rebuild kit, called "sure cure" added alot of preventative things, o-rings on the plunger things to stop leaks, etc etc. Hell, I even got a higher stall converter and some external pressure solenoid deally. It all made reasonable sense when the guy who rebuilt it explained, tranny guts are chinese to me mostly. Since it **** up, I figured prep it for a supercharger in the future so he built accordingly. Hope this gives you another view instead of going stock or overkill race tranny.

If it were more simpler things wrong with the tranny, I probably would have fixed it myself. Considering it was a problem rooted deep, let a specialist do it.

Running 12 PSI of boost, you do NOT want a factory trans! Unless your going to go with a 4R100.
Your going to need a built tranny for your power level.
