Exclamation Into reverse @ 55 mph

What could be the drawbacks if your tranny was knocked into reverse @ 55 mph? Well mine was about a month ago and all I have noticed is a little hesitation engaging reverse and a tiny leak at my pinion seal in the rear.
Anyone else had this happen to them???

I doubt slaming into reserve has anything to do with leak of teh pinion seal in teh rear.

But I bet that was a BIG uh OH.

Yeah, shiftin the '88 from D to OD I hit a bump on the highway and jerked it right over into R. Made a thunk, stalled the motor, and made me jump, but no harm done.

What truck and tranny do you have?

I did that in an old truck once... the truck shut off automatically and coasted to a stop

I did this to a Jeep I had when I was about 16 years old. When I accidentally hit the shifter, the tires actually started spinning in reverse and I threw it right back into drive. Never had any problems from the incident though.

It's a helluvan impact, so it's conceivable that it twisted the pinion or damaged the U-joints, but not likely.

The hesitation is probably a result, but there's not much you can do about it short of a rebuild. Just maintain the trans normally and wait for it to die naturally.

Road Head

I was getting head on the road in my old pontiac when my wife (girlfriend at the time) hit the shift lever and put it into reverse. There was a thunk and the motor quit. She paused, I coasted, put the car in neutral, started it up and put it back in drive, no problems.
She finished and so did I.
And THAT is a true story.

If all goes as planned I think that a charger along with a 8" lift will be the death of the stock tranny anyways. Then we will go for a monsterbox unless I find something better.
