I have a 1993 F150 XL 4x4 with a 4.9 liter 6 cylinder engine with an automatic transmission. The transmission frequently slips just a bit whenever I take off. I try to do a slower take-off to hopefully keep from damaging it but it still slips. If I continue to drive it like this will it gradually get worse or break all together? Will I further damage the transmission by continuing to drive it? In other words will this cause me to require a new transmission versus getting mine rebuilt?
Thanks for the reply. The transmission fluid is a little high if anything. I had the transmission fluid changed to see if it would help, but it didn't. The truck has about 117,000 miles on it. It has been worked hard. It was a Department of Transportation truck first, then a farmer owned it before I bought it from him.
Sorry to say but you better start saving up for a rebuild!
When they start slipping like that it's just a matter of time.
Phil

That What My Transmission Did Right Before It Blew Up. I Would Go To The Auto Parts Store And Buy Some Lucas Automatic Transmission Stablizer. I Heard It Works Great.

Lucas wouldn't hurt, but you will need to suck some fluid out so it won't be overfilled. It may help you get a little more life out of it, but you definitely have a rebuild in your near future.

When you get your Tanny rebuilt make sure they replace everything. The sensors, all the clutches and the nuetral saftey switch. Good luck. I paid 1,200 for mine to get rebuilt and I aslo got a shift kit installed and it makes a big difference. Good Luck

My stepson's '93 Ranger is doing the same thing. I took it to the dealer, and they quoted me $2000 for a rebuild, or $2600 for a factory refurb with a 3 year, 75,000 warranty. If the truck were worth more, I would have gone with the factory refurb, but instead, I found a used tranny for $200 and install for $250 cash. If he gets 50-60K out of it, I will consider it money well spent. I'm not about to put $2000+ in a 14 year old truck......
