Trans slip/pop

Hello. I used to be a member back in the day. Had to reregister. Now on to the question. 1997, 4.6, auto, 4x4. I can take off and as soon as the truck goes about 2 feet the trans seems like it pops into neutral. It revs up and slams into gear, chirping the tires. As I'm driving through twisty roads, it seems like it switches between a lower gear and o/d. Taking o/d off takes away some of it. It's a rough jerking and shifting of gears when it does it. But the kicker is it doesn't do it all the time. I drove it to work 11 miles no problem. Drove it from work to drop a friend off about 8 miles away, then home just under 20 miles. No problems. Go out a couple hours later to take my son to school. No problem there. On the way home, pulling out of the street it slipped. The shifting and bucking between gears wasn't as bad, but it's unnerving. The shift to neutral is a HUGE safety issue when I have to pull out. I can't say I've ever run into this and figured it'd be a good idea to post this here. It doesn't appear as though it's slipping like worn bands. I'm thinking it's more computer/electrical related. Any help will be highly appreciated. Feel free to respond to this or email me. Thank you.

hmm

But what is going? It doesn't act like the bands are shot. And it doesn't do it all the time. Everything is computer controlled, so is it a computer sensor or module doing this? I'd hate to r&r a tranny all because something inside that I can replace went out.

change in problem

Ok. so now with some driving today my problem has changed. The slip and then popping into gear has gone away, replaced by a high pitched whine (like a pump) and the o/d light flashing. Pump going out?? I dunno. I can replace those. Money is super tight as my daughter stuck us with her two kids and this is just not needed at this time.

If the OD light is now flashing, you should have codes stored that can be read out.

codes

But a regular code reader isn't going to cut it though. A friend of mine and I have been thinking torque converter. The truck doesn't do anything until above 2000rpm, then it hits hard and chirps the tires. Even when I power brake it, it does the same thing. All the hard shifting was going between 2500 and 1500rpm. If it's supposed to have a lock up converter, is it shot and all the slamming is it locking up at its set rpm? I was looking to have the trans rebuilt, but if I do this, I could be fixing a trans thats ok and sticking myself with a faulty converter after all the labor.
