shudder on acceleration has returned?

I had trouble 5000 miles ago with a transmission shudder at light acceleration from a stop. My mechanic removed the driveshaft as per TSB 04-1-6 and lubed it. The shudder went away immediately only to return this week. Is this a problem that will never be really solved or should I be looking somewhere else for a problem. The only thing the mechanic did differently from the TSB was to lube it with a regular grease because he didn't have any teflon grease. Would this cause the shudder to return so quickly?

Just to let all that have read this thread, I purchased the Motorcraft teflon grease from Ford and had my mechanic clean and relube the slip yoke (again) as per the TSB. I picked up the truck this evening and the shudder is no longer there. We'll see how long it lasts this time!

It could also be your driveshaft/pinion angle. I think there was a TSB about the shudder and I believe the fix was to install shims.

Thanks. If the shudder returns I'll look at that. I'll search for that TSB.

I have the same shudder, but I lowered the back 2"s with shakles... I purchased shims to change the angle of the rear end and it helped but I can still feel it...

It will return. In my experience, the only way to get rid of it for good is for the dealer to replace the entire driveshaft. In fact, the TSB that calls for lubing the slip-yoke also calls for replacing the entire driveshaft if they find metal shavings on the slip-yoke... I'm sure there are metal shavings on 9 out of 10 of these issues, but the dealers try to take the easy way out by just slaping some grease on it... Give it a few thousand miles and it will probably come back. When it does, insist they replace it.

I don't have the shudder but I get a clunk sound when I start to move foreward. I have removed the driveshaft three times already in about 30,000 miles and greased it with Mobil Synthetic grease. Solves the problem for a while but as stated above it comes back. I just removed and regreased it last week and so far so good...But it will return eventually.

My new '04 SCrew w/28K has a speed sensitive shudder. It happens only 50% of the time, and I have felt it in 2nd, 3rd, & OD between 55 and 65. The Dealer said it was tire balance, but that has already been done and it did not help. Because of this problem I just paid $1700 for a 6yr/100k extended warranty since my factory warranty ends next month. My '97 S-Cab lost it's tranny at 97K , and cost me $2100. I hope this is just a drive shaft!

Has anyone done this themselves? If so how hard is it to do and how long does it take? I have an 01 Screw 4x4, does the TSB cover my truck?

it's not that difficult. the grease came in a syringe and was less that $5 w/tax. the entire process took me about an hr. the hardest part was breaking the bolts for which i had to use my foot on the ratchet. there are four 12mm bolts on the shaft and two 13mm for the bracket where they link the 2 shafts together (u don't have to remove both bolts). i had to do a little prying to push the shaft forward in order to get it off the lip on the rear end. after that the yoke slides right out. mine was bone dry. oh yeah have some newspaper handy as about 6ozs of fluid leaked out in da process....i did mine last weekend and she runs so much smoother now
