Honda Help????? Trans Not shifting

SO i got the chance to drive the ladys damn honda for 7 hours over 300 miles and over two mtn passes and i now know the reason why we always take my 150 everywhere. This thing sucked.

But back to my ?. I know that this is a f150 forum but i thought that maybe somebody could throw some info my way. She had a rock hit the oil pan to the tranny and all the oil leaked. This was all before me being with her. Like a year ago. THe famly had a friend that could do light and i mean light mechanic work. He owed tehm a favor and got a tranny from a junk yard and installed it.

Well to make a long story short.... that tranny went bad within days so the got another tranny from a junk yard and installed it.

NO the thing wont shift from a 2-3 unless you rev it all teh way up past the shift point and then let of the gas and if(and i do mean "IF") it shifts its hard along with everyother shift.

It just runs like crap and shifts all hard and *^##*.

I tried to pour some ATF additive cause he said that it was a stuck valve. The cars not worth a rebuild and shes been driving it like this for almost a year and i cant stand it.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what it might be. Any thing to try. We have to move to cali from wa and shes driving it behind my truck while i pull a trailer otherwise i would just tow it down there.

Help

Honda transmissions are very fickle about the fluid used. As far as I know, there are only two types that meet their required specs. Their own Honda Z-1 fluid and Castrol APTF for forgein makes. Any other fluid does not have the correct friction modifier count. You can run DexIII in an emergency but the manual says to replace it with Z-1 ASAP.

My personal diagnosis is the replacement trans were filled with the wrong fluid.

Honda's are easy to replace the fluid as they have a drain plug on the bottom of the transmission and a fill plug on top just below the master cylinder. Should read ATF on the fill plug. 17MM, I believe.

Your transmission is in need of replacement. Maybe a rebuild if you can find the right mechanic.

Good luck,

Joey

A stuck/bent/broken valve could be, or low fluid pressure sounds likely too, or both. That would explain having to rev it way up(until enough pressure builds to pop open a valve).

Sounds like the "mechanic" who installed it either jacked something up big time, or the junkyard find was already on it's way out. Some additive could help but I wouldn't have high hopes for a pour-in fix.

Drop the pan and change out the fluid/ filter. Few people are familiar with import trannys so you'll have to go seat-of-pants there. If you can locate the valve body, you could inspect that for any obvious damage or defects. Ensure you use that goofy import ATF, "common" ATF types won't work properly and that could be your problem.

Every Honda I've used has been great. My mother is really loyal, she's owned like 3 in a row and kept them all for years, only problem was on some 80's Prelude and the timing belt busted. She has a 99 Acura TL now with like 140k on it and it drives like new. You'll still get a little squeal out of the tires when you mash it at 40mph and it goes to the rev limiter at 7200.

Our Odyssey is an excellent vehicle. I am running Amsoil Universal ATF in it, which, according to Amsoil, and the label, is Honda Z-1 approved.

The vehicle now has 57K miles on it and 40K of those have been with Amsoil's ATF.

After speaking with 3 Honda dealers, the outcome was mixed per my question regarding the use of a synthetic universal ATF which is Z-1 approved (meets/exceeds). 2 dealers were very much in favor of using the synthetic (service managers and a few techs) and one dealer was very much against using anything BUT Honda fluids, even in the motor----tried to tell me using anything in motor other than Honda motor oil could violate warranty.

Good luck with your vehicle.

Doc, here's another site for ya, then.

http://www.odyclub.com/forums/

Could come in handy. Search around for Amsoil and other types of ATF.

Regards,

Joey
