something bad happened when i replaced the filter on my C-6 today

well i went and got a filter and pan gasket for the 85 F250 C-6 trans

i dropped the pan, no big deal cept i had to dremel the crossmemember bottom lip some to get a socket onto the middle rear pan bolt

after that the pan was down

then i started chucking what i thought were the filter bolts but i was actually in reality pulling the bigger valve body ones,

and the front end of the VB came down on me and then i realized that uh oh houston we have a problem its not just the filter coming down but its the VB too, i realized that i needed to be pulling the smaller bolts not the larger ones, too late though.

i am too used to gm transmissions in which this cant happen by accident on so i didnt even stop to see exactly what was going to come off with what bolts i was removing,

well anyways i went to push the vb and all back up to put the bolts back in and i couldnt get the vb up all the way, and well i made it go back up with the vb bolts torque

then i removed the smaller filter bolts, and put the new filter on and then the pan on and put in 4 quarts real quick and fired her up to try her out

well i had a new problem, i only had forward range!

uh oh....!

so i had to take it all back apart again and take the vb down and it looked like when i made the vb go back up it bent the linkage for the range selector and maybe also the kickdown lever too

not good,

i managed to bend the range selector one enough to get it back into the range selctor valve, but i never did get the kickdown link back into the opposite side of the valve, it now drives fine

what a pita

thee are three notches in the side of the valve on the kickdown link side of the valve

which one is for the link to go into ??

i odnt understand how youre supposed to get both links into both sides of the freaking valve when the valve is in the damn VB and youre on your back trying to put the stupid VB back up on the trans case and also at the same freaking time make the links go into both sides of the valve

impossible.

yet the damn thing sure fell off the link ends very easily when i pulled the stupid bolts,

so what the heck ?

is it ok to drive the truck with a non functioning kickdown ?

what a pain

thanks for anything

At this point I would do nothing. If all that you lost was your passing gear, you can pull it down manually if you have to.

Yes, you're fine. Just kick it down manually when you need it too.

This is ~$7 at almost any parts store that carries HELP! (MotorMite) brand stuff.

ok thanks

is there a nut or something else that sticks up on the inside of the pan when it is installed ?

i mean its not flush inside the pan, or ?

if not then i could jut take a drain plug and get a nut for it and weld the nut in the pan

hopefully ill be able to do this tomorrow

right now ive got the pan down on the 97 F150 4x4

we have had to take it down three times now, it leaks everytime

going to get a ford dealer gasket tomorrow

tired of messing around with it

it is 14 bolt pan, what model tranny is it ?

says metric and reusable gasket, but it had an aftermarket cork one on it

the tranny shudders and doesnt act right, its 160k miles

probably too late for it

thanks
