Transfer case problem

I just bought a 1997 f150 4 wheel drive. The 4 wheel drive shifter is on the floor. Its very hard to shift it into and out of 4 wheel drive.Oce in 4 wheel drive it runs fine. Its very stiff shifting. Anyone else had this problem?

Howdy and welcome!

Inspect the linkage for heavy rust.

I'm just gonna ask the basics but with a mechanical 4wd system you should be at a slow role when shifting into 4wd drive. Don't mean to be insulting just checking...

Between 2hi and 4hi can be done at any speed, it's shift-on-the-fly. To go down to 4 low, you should be rolling slowly forward and then shift.

Stuck t-case shifters are nothing new. If they're not used often they rust up and get covered in road grime. Just get under there and start blasting all the linkage points with WD40 or PB Blaster and work the shifter back and forth as much as possible. It'll loosen up with use.
