Trans Extension Housing

Have a 1997 F150 4.6 liter 2 wheel drive with 4R70W trans. Have had some lingering vibration and after replacing many components I'm to the point of replacing the transmission extension housing (thinking possibly a bad bearing). Has anyone out there found this to solve a vibration problem? Also, does anyone have information on replacement steps and difficulty?

Also, I have regulary changed the transmission fluid and filter....replacing the fluid with MERCON/MERCON III grade. I saw someone post that this transmission needed the new MERCON V fluid but all the information I have says the 1997 should stay with the original fluid. Can anyone verify the accuracy of this?

Look through these pics & their captions.

Then read the TSB in this thread about ATF applications.

'97 was before Mercon V was developed to help the 4R70w which needs friction modifiers to shift smoothly.

The extension housing bushing is known to cause vibration issues. A good fix is to drill a hole in it and send lube oil from the line pressure port of the transmission.
