gear selector loose

I have a 1997 F150 that I got in May 1996. The problem I'm having is the gear selector on the column in the past week has gotten more play in it, or seems to be looser. It is tricky to put it into "P" and then when I go to start it back up, it takes moving the selector quite a bit to get the truck to start. Anyone have ideas on what needs to be done?

Take the plastic piece off the dash that is above and around the steering wheel (feels like it will break off but it won't just pull bottom UP and OUT). Then you can see where the connector is after you move the black rubber boot up the selector shaft. You can then see if it simply the connector, or it may be the wire going from the selector to the transmission. If the wire is the problem I do not know how to fix it, but if its just the little bolt connector to the steering collum just tighten it a bit and grease it. See if that helps.
