97' F250 transfer case not shifting into 4wd

I'm working on my uncles '97 f250 4x4...this truck has the old manual transfer care and its the days before the SUPER DUTY so this thing is almost identical to the f150...the transfer case feels like it shift into 4wd but nothing happens and the light doesnt come on. Its definitely not in 4wd. Any ideas? Anyone have a similar problem? The linkage looks fine but I hard to tell if somethings just not letting it move far enough to engage that where I plan to start.

I didnt see any recent discussions on the subject but if you do let me know.

How bout low range?

Is it identicle to the '97+ F-150 or '92-'96 F-150?

Any ideas?

The automatic trans in my 1997 (2nd half of 97) F150 4x4 with electronic 4wd is behaving poorly. When I turned the knob to 4wd high to drive on snow I started to pull away and than heard a slight bang and the rear wheels started spinning. It felt like I had 4x4 than didn't. I tried this a couple of times with the same result. I then tried 4wd low and found the same thing. Any ideas where I might start looking for the problem.
