How hard to swap trans on 4x4?

My 4R70W trans is dying a quick death. Unfortunately no local shops (well reputable ones) can get to it for at least 3-4 weeks plus one week to rebuild. This is my daily driver and I need a truck.

First: Has anyone purchased a rebuilt trans online (pheonix performance comes to mind)?

Second: Pulling the trans - I have plenty of experience working on cars and truck but they have all been manuals & 4x2s. How much extra work does the transfer case add to this swap?

Thanks

On the trans dropping; you have torsion bars I believe.
Take a close look under and see the rear of the bars are supported by the trans cross member.
Does it suggest something extra to deal with?
Good luck.

Yes, torsion bars have to come out. Looks like an all weekend project.

Anyone else?

4r70w removal

Have fun! only need 2 sizes of wrenches. (13mm, 18mm)

Just finished this last night.

Removal of the torsion bars is not a must if you are worried about them. It does make it much easier though.

Simply separate the tranfer case from the tranny. Slide the transfercase to the passenger side. (you must remove both the tranny support cross member and the rear shield cross member under the transfer case if so equipped) The transfer case will sit ontop of the torsion bars suppport.

This is after both drive shafts are removed.

Pull the tranny back and seperate from engine then drop front down to remove from truck. Be sure to hold converter so it doesn't slid out forward on you.

On my 99 Off road I had to jack up the drivers side only about 3 inches to slide out the tranny.

RENBLADES

Great info in your post, I am going to be taking the tranny in my 97' 4.6L out next weekend. Are there any tools or tricks that you wish you had or new about that would have made it go smoother.
