Tranny ?'s

I have two ?s

1.) i have a 98 f150 with a manual and was told it is a m5 r2 transmission. I have to replace it and found a tranny that fits 88-96 f150s and broncos listed as an m5 r2. Is this the same tranny?

2.) I have also seen advertisements for a ZF tranny that fits f150s-f450s. What is the differance from that tranny to mine and can i run it with my 4.6l?

1. Yes, you have the M5OD-R2, however only the '88-'96 300/302 trucks and '97-'03 4.2L trucks share the same bolt pattern. If you have a 4.6L, the bell pattern is different and you need to find the proper donor truck.

2. The ZF-5 or 6 is an extremely heavy duty unit and if a 4x4 setup very desireable. I've almost paid 1000 for a non running truck just for the tranny. It will "bolt in" with some mods if you get the correct bell pattern. I don't know what motor you have to narrow your donor search, but for sure a donor of a ZF couldn't be a 460 or 7.3L diesel. If you have the 4.6L, yer stuck with finding the rare ZF-5 '99-'01 F-2/350 from a 5.4L or 6.8L, or the more common, but prolly harder to stuff in, ZF-6 from a '99+ F-2/3/4/550 5.4L, 6.8L or 6.0L diesel. On the other hand if you have the 4.2L V6, any '88-'97 F-2/350 with the 300 or 351w will bolt to the motor.

PS, love the numbered questions. Wish more would do that

IM gald i mad eit easy by numbering the ?'s. I have the 4.6L and am curious on what it would take to put a zf into it. I have seen 6 and 5 spd ones and would love to get a 6 spd in there. I am planning in the futuure into turning this into my fun ride but i also do some pulling with it and i htink thats how i blew the one i have in there now. Along with the ocassional burn out....LOL! What would it take to put one of these in and what vehicle would i look for to best compleate this swap?

If you have the 4.6L the only donor trucks with compatable would be superdutys with the 5.4L, 6.8L, or 6.0L (I'm purdy sure on the 6.0, let me double check).

I haven't seen a writeup anywhere on anyone doin' a six speed swap, but it's common for the 5 speed to get bolted into the pre '97s. I'm also not sure how or if the floor pan of the cab would need to be modified to fit these larger trannys on the 97+.
