shifting problems

Hi
New guy here. Just bought a 92 f150 xlt, 5.0 v8, automatic with od.
My problem is when i start out at from a stop sign in reg drive mode,it acts like first is slipping, takes a little reving and moves slow and speeds up then shifts normally. However, if I physically put the truck in first, it starts out great. Is this a vacume mod problem? Can I adjust it to cure it.
Kinda acts like its not downshifting al the way to first gear when I come to a stop.
Otherwise, its my 2nd ford truck and so far I love it.
Thanks for any help guys.

No. Ford quit using vacuum kickdown modulators in 1/2-tons in '86. What's the TRANS code from your door sticker? E is the E4OD; U is the AOD. If you have an "OD OFF" button on the shifter, it's the E4OD.

You can adjust the AOD's TV & shift cables, but if it's an E4OD, that's a symptom of it dying. They were significantly upgraded in '95 due to lots of problems, so if you get a '95-up used or reman E4OD, it'll outlive the truck.

Its the 4od, or the od is on the shifter lever. fluid looked fine, but the previous owner just had it changed. I pretty much just manually start out in first then just pop it up into drive right away, then it shifts fine. Just dosent want to automatically downshift to first when you come up to a stop sign.
I will have to get it in the shop and see if anything is not looking right.
thanks alot guys

Start saving your nickels NOW - a reman E4OD is ~$2K. You might be able to find a good used one in the Parts For Sale forum on FSB. That BBS is geared more to pre-'97 trucks.
