Swapping from M5OD-R2 to a ZF5

I have a 94 F150 4X4 300-6 with the Mazda 5 spd. I would like to swap out the Mazda tranny in place of the heavy duty ZF5 model, since the ZF5 has the "granny" 1st gear. Would the ZF5 bolt up to my t-case?? Are the two trannys the same length? Any major mods that I would have to do to get this to work?

Thanks alot guys!!

You would need a ZF5 from a 351 4x4 truck. The 460/7.3 IDI/7.3L PSD all have different bell patterns, and a 4x2 tranny won't bolt to your xfer case.

So the tranny cases are the same length on both the M5OD and the ZF5? If so I am calling to try and find one tomorrow.

I'm sorry I don't know the length of the ZF.

The 5.8L has the same "smallblock" bellhousing as the 5.0L & 4.9L, so a ZF from any of them would work fine. Diesels & 7.5Ls are "big-blocks". There are PLENTY of old threads about this exact swap on FSB, so do some searching over there & I'm sure you'll find everything you need to know.

For what the guys over at FSB are saying, swapping the M5OD out for the ZF5 is a direct bolt in. But the ZF5 also seems to bring a premium price also, so I am going to do a little shopping around and see if I can find one for a good price. Thanks for all the help guys!!!

Remember that you have more choices than just those 2; there's also the NP 435 & BW T-18/19. There's a transmission thread on FSB somewhere that lists virtually every trans used in F-series up to ~'97.

I kinda want to use the ZF5 since it has the "granny" 1st and also an OD, the best of both worlds IMO. Plus since it is a direct bolt in I won't have to move anything or change any crossmembers, and I can also use all my hydro clutch stuff that currently on my truck.

The list of trannys is also a sticky at the top of this page also.
