Fluid Question

Change both the fluid and filter. Don't have a power flush done at one of these quicky lube places. On a 14 year old truck there's bound to be junk inside that transmission that doesn't need to be moved around. At least drop the pan install a new filter and refill. Repeat every 15-30K. If you're able to drain the torque converter while the pan is off that will get more of the old fluid out. Either way, fresh fluid and a clean filter may improve the shift quality of the transmission and add to its life.

the pump in the tranny will fill up the converter. turn the truck on. pour a few quarts in go thru all the gears, add few more quarts. go thru all the gears, few more quarts go thru gears again. keep repeating that. dont drive it doing this. hold the brake whie going thru the gears. after about 10 quarts start driving slowly. few more quarts.drive little more. you will be able to fell when its right. just keep checking the dipstick

A few things to Add, Don't start the engine with the Tranny dry. First, stick your long neck funnel in the tranny filler tube and pour in 4 quarts of fluid in the tranny, THEN start the engine, then add more fluid while the engine is running (have the bottles of ATF ready to pour in with the caps off). When it gets near full (over 10 quarts, hold the brake, move the selector through the gears, add a quart or less of ATF, check the fluid level with the dipstick, keep doing this until you reach the proper fill level. Don't overfill.
