Pardon me if this question has been addressed before

however, I'm in desperate need to know if the transmission in a 2000 4.6L V8 can be interchanged to a 1998 Ford F150 pickup Triton 4.6l v8 2wd Vin# 1FTZX176XWNA90658 TRANNY TYPE IS 4R70W.AODE-W without ANY modifications.

The truck that needs the replaced transmission is currently in South America so it is imperative that the correct transmission is exported.The truck is originally from the States.

I spoke to someone from a Ford dealership in NYC and they indicated that the tranny for the 1998 and 2000 model have different part numbers which makes them incompatible.As such, I'm a bit unsure since it was posted here https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=211867here that they are interchangeable and the dealership claims it CANT. ANY additional information you deem useful to assist my search would be GREATLY appreciated.(links etc etc).

In the event that the 98 and 00 tranny's are diff., can someone indicate what model and years are interchangeable?

Once again I apologise if this particular topic has been addressed before. I can be E-mailed at richardo646@hotmail.com

Thanks again everyone.

Howdy and welcome. I'm not aware of any differences between the two 4R70w trannys, other than is the 2000 4x4? 4x2 and 4x4 trannys are not switchable.

As Adrian already said, it is important that the drivetrain be the same.

A 4X4 tranny won't fit a 4X2 and vice versa.

Steve and Adrian, thanks again.
The 2000 replacement tranny is from a 2wd pickup.

How are the TRANNY ID's deciphered???Do the tranny ID's really matter?

1998 4.6L v8 (4R70W,AODE,W) 4X2 TRANNY ID# F85P-FA(PKF-BB)
1998 4.6L v8 (4R70W,AODE,W) 4X2 TRANNY ID# F85P-BA(PKF-AX)

2000 4.6L v8 (4R70W,AODE,W) 4X2 TRANNY ID# YL3P-HA
2000 4.6L v8 (4R70W,AODE,W) 4X2 TRANNY ID# YL3P-JA

I know for the 4R70W,
4 =4forward gears,
r= rear drive
70 or 75 is the torque capacity of the trans without the zero
w= wideband

Thanks again.

You would be farther ahead to call a transmission repair shop. They will know for sure what tranny your 98 needs. One basic difference between the 98 and 00 transmissions is the way the vehicle speed is reported to the instrument cluster and PCM. The 98 uses a Vehicle Speed Sensor. I am not sure that the 00 uses one. I believe that it takes its speed input from the rear diff ABS sensor.

Thanks for the input JMC. To date I've already contacted several transmission shops but no luck thus far. Most of them would like me to take the vehicle in and I can since it's South America and the others arent very helpful. Seems as if they arent making any money off of this, it's of no interest whatsoever.Thanks again
