1999 F-150 Which Tranny To upgrade 2wd 2 4wd conversion

Hello All,

I have a 99 f-150 with the 4.2 and a 5sp tranny. It has been converted to straight axle and now it is time to do the tranny. I am wondering which transmission I should go to and which transfer case. I am hoping to find a bolt up already together combo. I appreciate the help.

Howdy and welcome!

Your 4.2L shares the bell housing pattern with the 302 and 300, so you could just use a M5OD-R2/Borg Warner 1356 combo from an 88+ F-150/Bronco or another '97+ 4.2L (not 4.6L) F-150.

One hangup from your current setup is shown in this thread by JMC. He'll chime in with what is goin on.

M5OD differences

I'd really like to see your solid axle swap. What did you use?

Thanks Adrianspeeder. I will take some pics and put up a link to them. It looks pretty good, but allot of custom work.

I am assuming that you are going from a 4x2 to a 4x4? Go to http://car-part.com/ and look up the tranny and T-case for your model year. Unfortunatly the 4x2 5 speed will not in any way shape or form bolt up to the t-case. Been there done that got the t-shirt. You may have to extend the speed sensor wire as the sensor is in the extension housing on the t-case.

Here is a pic of the truck and front suspension. I am getting gears into it, that is the reason for the jack under the axle.

The front is a Dana 44, although I am keeping my eye open for a Dana 60. You got the rear right though, it is a 9" with 5.14 gears.

After seeing pictures of your truck, nice truck BTW, I expect a stock clutch will not hold up for long. I would seriously look into a ZF from a superduty along with the t-case. EDIT: A 95-96 Superduty used a ZF S5-47 transmission. In 96 it was bolted to the gasoline engines so it should bolt up to the V6. It has a wide ratio gearset 1st 5.72 2nd 2.94 3rd 1.61 4th 1.0 5th 0.76 Reverse 5.24.

Just a point, the 88-97 Superdutys (what the F-450 is now) arn't the same as the '99 plus Superdutys (F-2/3/4/550s) are.

You need a 88-97 F-2/350 ZF-5 tranny from behind a 300 or 351 to bolt to your 4.2L.

The beefier S5-47 version was used in 95, 96, and 97. Don't rule it out, as I think the S5-42 found from 88-94 would also be fine behind "only" a V6. Keep in mind this tranny (albet different ratios and bell pattern) was even used behind the 7.3L.

As a warning the 4x4 ZF in the small bell housing patterns arn't given away due to their popularity in half ton truck swaps.

I have an update and issue. I decided to go with an M5OD and BorgWerner.... Fit in nicely without any issues untill...... I went with the crossmember that came with my 2wd because asside from being a side mount versus top and bottom, it was the same basic shape. Anyhow, because of my massive lift, the from driveshaft is not going to clear the crossmember. So, is my only option to box the member and cut away intill it will clear????? Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.
