On my 4R100 I put it right at the tranny on the line that leads to the tranny cooler.

Hayden makes a 2-piece kit you can get at Pep Boys or other auto stores. Remove the top line on the radiator and install the barbed nipples from the kit (they have an inverted flare; my thread size was 5/8 x 18).

Use 3/8 trans. line to route to a 3/8 t-fitting available from plumbing supply houses; install and clamp the trans line on 3/8 barbed nipples, also available at the plumbing supply house. Route the temp gauge pickup (mechanical bulb or electrical sending unit) to the t-fitting. Take a look at "Just Pics" in my gallery:

go to summit racing's online catalog and pick up a transmission temp manifold. sure, it might be a little more spendy but it's very hassel free and straight forward.
Autometer Transmission Temperature Manifold

it's an aluminum block with compression fittings to secure onto your transmission line. simply screw in your sender unit w/ t-tape and you're set (make sure your sender is on the bottom pointing up so the fluid runs over the sender by gravity)

i put my manifold just behind the front bumper because the lines are soooo much easier to access

There are pressure lines in the tranny's (4r70w anyway) that the temp sensor will screw right into. Now I have heard this is not the best spot to do it because it tells you a little different temp than what the trans is really at. I'm not sure if it shows high or low but it gives you a general idea. I did mine this way, it was very simple.

The plug is on the drivers side nera the trans shift linkage, just remove the plug and install temp sending unit you can run the wire down through the shft cable gromet and wire tie the wire to the shift cable.
One can argue where the best place for a sending unit is for ever. If you want high temps install in line, you will be seeing torque converter temp, if you want to see actual trans temp insatll in test port, the computer get the trans temp from the oil in the pan The wireing harness on the valve body has a thermister built into it, so that must be good enough for Ford.

hey chucks i found that plug last night. i am ordering a gauge next week and ill throw it in there. that is where i had it in the chevy i had last. it took a little longer to build heat in that port but once up to temp it was right on with the pcm. i figure this will be the same. thanks.

Yes, I have an auto tap scanner and the transmission fluid temp. as seen by the pcm is the same that the guage displays in that test port, and as I posted it is easy to get the sending unit wire to that spot.
