88 F-150 5spd whine

I've read a lot of the threads on a whining 5spd but they all seem to have a different problem or they never posted back to say what it actually was, so here goes-

I just bought this truck two days ago.

1988 F-150 300 I6
234,000mi on motor and tranny, 2WD

Leaking fluid from transmission(was three-ish quarts low!!) and so refilling made it much quieter, but the same prob=

All gears are louder than I would have expected, no noise when clutch is depressed or engaged while in neutral. However, if it's in a gear, it's noisy- gear whining is heard in the cab without too much trouble. Is that normal?

Second thing- in 5th(OD), there is a different, higher whine. Easily heard in the cab with windows closed, sorta gives you a headache. Goes away instantly if the clutch is depressed or if it's in neutral. I don't think this is normal since I've been around 5-speeds for years and I've never heard whining in 5th like that. Any info would be great!

Oh, and my theory on the second thing is that the guy that did the clutch(put in a centerforce, BTW) either A- Didn't replace the throwout bearing, or B- Replaced it with a 4-speed bearing. I was looking around for the bearings and it's apparently different which bearing you use.

thanks for the help!

-Joshua

P.S. - Oh! And I'm dying to know- do these trucks come with a fatty(like 5 inches in diameter) one-peice driveshaft stock? Cause mine has one and it looks fairly new, like aftermarket or something... dunno, just curious. thanks!

Well, the trans only holds 4 quarts so if you added three something got cooked prolly. Hopefully not.

From the sounds of things, I think you may have a mess of bad bearings in the tranny. If speeder is correct and the tranny was in fact that low, it will definitely cause gear whine and probably a lot of bearing dammage to go with it if it is run like that for long. Based on what you said I don't think you have a throw out bearing problem. That should make noise regardless if the clutch is out (taking the load off the bearing).

good luck
