I feel my 4r70w in my '97 4.6 is on it's last leg and am looking into a fully built 4r70w with upgraded internals and valve body, and a higher stall converter. Is the 97-98 Mustang 4r70w the same as the 97-98 F150?? What companies have a good reputation for built transmissions?
The transmissions them selves are identical. However the tailshafts are different between a car and truck trans.PA makes some good tranny's.It would be much cheaper to build one yourself.Try a search on google for built 4r70w..thats what I did to find all my upgraded parts.
Car and truck tailshafts are the same. I build these transmissions for locals frequently. For a long term warranty on a well built transmission I would suggest the monsterbox. It may seems pricey, but I have known people to pay more than that for a sub par rebuild from transmission shops such as cottman and aamco. At least with the monsterbox you are getting a properly built unit to the specs myself and Gregg specified.

I can vouch for the monster box. I have one and am putting over 800 through it.
Just some insight, this is actually my third one. The first one we blew the converter (dirty dog can elaborate), basically was a faulty part.
The second tranny I actually broke. Snapped third gear in several peices and split the case. Again from the looks of it, it was a bad part.
I am the only one who has had any issues out of these trannies, but also I am putting twice as much HP and TQ than anyone else.
Now I will attest that this tranny is top notch quality and all of the bugs are worked out of them. Plus the warranty is killer. I break the tranny on a Thursday, call on Friday, have the new tranny on my door tuesday. That is quality service. Plus if you have someone else put it in, they will cover labor as well.
I balooned the stock converter with a stock 4.6, towing heavy gross combined loads.
Had the trans built to heavy specs with a diesel converter and all the rest of the good stuff.
So far so good.
While not the same application as what you do with yours, it was again poor parts from the factory thats fine for light towing but no good when putting a lot of twist to them.
The builder is Level 10.

And like Skid sed,the warranty service is unrivaled considering that Jasper(deeper pockets than any independant tranny builder) handles the building/shipping/warranty.Tho i will say its suited to the higher hp owner considering the stall is just a bit higher than stock. If you dont care for a higher stall maybe 1 could be built w/ a stock convertor.Gotta talk to Mad for that one ...http://www.madenterprise.com/

I've done quite abit of searching as I need to replace my 4r70w in a 97 as well.
Monster Transmission at www.eatmyshift.com has a decent price and makes quality transmissions.
From all my research I'd recommend going with a trany for a '99 as there were some internal mods after '98. When intalling a '99 or newer does require a Mod to your wiring harnes to the Tranny.
Do not follow the instructions to repin on the tccoa website they are backwards. You will find them in the thunderbird section of modular depot as a sticky.

Ps...Hard to beat a 2 year warranty on a tranny .
Do you know if the MonsterBox 4R70W listed on their website for $2600,00 comes with the total domination torque converter ?
