I used to have a chatter that sounded like it was comming from the trans when the clutch was depressed. Even when I was under the truck. I finally found a metal tag had broken off inside the heat shield of one of the 4 cats. I was convinced it was comming from the trans, but after I took out the tag it went away. Others have said that their starters weren't completly disingaging so the flywheel was hitting the starter when the clutch is depressed. Anyway good luck, rattles, squeaks and chatter dive me nuts.

did you feel it in the pedal? Do you by chance know what is involved in getting to the wheel bearing/seals on the rear? 2 Wheel Drive. I do not know what kind of tool that is, or if it can be rented, and is the axle connected?

Thanks for your help

No I never felt anything in the clutch, nor did I ever read about that in the forums. I think you have rear discs, since you sig says a 2000, so I think you would be able to see an axle seal leak. But, to replace that you do have to pull the axle shaft out of the axle. To do that I'd recommend a manual, so you have step by step instructions and pics. But what about the u-joints? They often fail because they aren't greasable. They dry out and are easy to replace. They shouldn't have any play if you turn the shaft and hold the other side. Also, have you checked the clutch fluid level? It could be low and not completly disengaging. If you top it off make sure you remove the rubber piece first. And I understand if you have to bleed it, it takes forever.

I have drums on the back, but I am sure it is the same. I will have to check the u-joints! Thanks again for your help
