5 speed for '4 new body

Which trans. would I need to find to switch from an auto to a 5 or 6 speed manual? Do you know of any one else doing it? How compatible/ tough is the setup, if there is one? Thanks for any input!

Computer will not like it. Since you cant get an 04 V8 manual puter, there is going to be trouble.

Any mustang transmission will work. However, I dont know about the load of the truck and towing on that tranny. Tremec would make a tranny for your application. Also the superduty tranny would work and have 6 gears (5 and granny). Torque capacity is very high.

I think a M5OD, which came in pre-04 4.6's, will bolt right up to your motor. It's not the strongest tranny, but if you don't beat on it it'll last. If you do want to beat on it you'll be better off with a ZF5 or 6 from a super duty, which will bolt up, but I understand is too tall, so you'd have to lift or cut the cab. Or if you want a "drag/race" tranny you could use a mustang racing t-56 tranny. I'm not sure what else you'd have to do for that. You'd probably also need to move/modify the crossmember and have a shop change the length of your driveshaft. You'll definetly need a clutch pedal, slave and flywheel. If you have a center console that blocks the floor you would have to get rid of it or figure out how to cope with the long travel of a truck shifter. As far as the computer, I'm sure any of the chip programmers could deactivate the auto tranny functions, but I don't see why it would cause any problem besides light up the tranny malfunction light. There's probably more, like splicing in a speedo, you might want to search under manual tranny swap with member JMC he seems to know the most. Good luck, I'm interested in buying a truck and doing this, so if you do it let me know.

I only wish I had the skills to put one of those in my truck

A M5OD-R2 from a 97-03 F150 with the 4.6L (the V6 is a different pattern) will bolt to your engine. In 99 you could get a superduty with the ZF5 with the modular pattern behind the 5.4L, but good luck findin one. Any ZF6 from behind the 5.4L and 6.8L gassers will also share your 4.6L pattern, but the diesel is different.

I'm not sure about the 04+ trucks, but when doin a manual swap on the 89-03 trucks with the E4OD, 4R100, and 4R70w, the computer will throw a check engine light with all the tranny codes, but it doesn't affect the engine performance.

Every point seems to have been covered. The M5OD from a 99-03 4.6 will bolt up to the engine but the cross member and drive shaft will need "adjusting" You could get the pedals from the 06 4.2 with manual tranny. Should bolt up with little trouble. If you go that route check out what Ford is using for a tranny cross menber with the 4.2 5 speed manual. A T-56 with modular bell housing could be made to fit too. I would use the latter as it is a stronger tranny. For the engine mangement I would contact Mike Troyer to set you up with a custom tune to delete the auto tranny functions. Good luck and let us know what you decide to do.

JMC, what kind of tranny do you have behind your 5.4L?

I have the M5OD. It is the second one that I have put in. I have a 3rd one from a 98 for parts that I will use to rebuild the 1st one. The current one is starting to go.... I wish that I could find a way to bolt a Transfer Case to a T-56.

Ahh.. Why don't you just bolt a ZF-5 or 6 to it? I know it would take modding but can't it be done?

And it seems like that you should be able to take a shaft from a M5OD or something and put it into a T-56. Just my thought

Without going into too many details. You will need a fly wheel that will 1st fit the clutch pressure plate that you will be using and the crank shaft bolt pattern. A Cobra 8 bolt flywheel should bolt up. You could then use the cobra pressure plate, clutch disk and a t-56 Modular tranny. If you use a ZF tranny you will need a 5.4 F-250/350 flywheel and clutch. Now the ZF is taller and may not fit in the tranny tunnel of the cab. The shift lever may not line up, for that matter the T-56 levcer might not line up. But this doesn't really matter becasue you will need to cut out the hole for the lever anyways. If you use a M5OD you will need a flywheel from a Windsor 8 bolt 4.6 F-150 truck engine. The clutch will fit through the 97-03 model years. You will also have to make provision for the hydraulic clutch system. It has to bolt up to the firewall so pay close attention to the 06 4.2 trucks for a view of how it all fits. None of this is difficult to do as long as you plan the installation and take careful measurements.
