94 F150 DIFFERENTIAL gasket replacement

i realize this is NOT the "pre 97 forum" but i posted it there and here since this seems to get more traffic..

94 F150 DIFFERENTIAL gasket replacement

heres the actual post though:

i have noticed i have a small leak
yippeee for me, now i have to fix it...

Ok, I ve been researching doing this online.

Couple things I find is that ford didn’t use a gasket… but there are aftermarket ones available??? At least that’s what I find at the AutoZone site:

DIFFERENTIAL AXLE GASKET for a
1994 FORD TRUCK F150 1/2 TON P/U 2WD
REAR AXLE
WITH 10 BOLT COVER

FELPRO
DIFFERENTIAL COVER
# RDS55341

So, is that the right part im looking for? Or should I just use RTV, and which one?
Basically here is what I figure I have to do:

Remove the cover and drain.

Clean both side of any material

Put on the gasket with the sealant

Put back on and tighten

But if I just use a sealant like the RTV, wait 15 mins to allow it to get tacky, then replace.

After its put back on, wait 24 hrs before refilling

Sound right?

those spots on the ground are from times when it sits for 2 days or so, but regardless I want it fixed. I also tried getting under there and finding the fill hole but couldn’t. what did you recommend to refill with? I’ve read to use Synthetic… your thoughts?

Thanks!

Rear end gasket

I have a 98 4x4 LS 8.8 rear. When I changed rear end fluid I used a paper gasket. Smeared a little blue rtv on both sides of gasket then reinstalled cover.Tighten bolts from bottom to top.Only weighted one hour before filling with fluid. No leaks. Used royal purple 75w140 syn fluid, already has LS additive in it. Took almost 3 qts.You did not say if yours was a LS.

Yeah, you could use the gasket or RTV. Doesn't really matter. What does matter is if you have Limited Slip or not. What is the axle code on your door jam sticker if you don't know it.
