Look on door jam sticker. U is the 4R70w which needs Mercon V. E is the 4R100 which needs Mercon.

Man for $129 take it to a tranny shop, have the filter replaced and have it flushed. Less mess, less hassle, .........but more expensive.

Pull the dipstick on the tranny. It will be labelled whether to use Mercon or Mercon V. Usually, it is located on the handle. If not, look near the hash marks on the stick.

how many quarts does it take to change filter and fluid?

I have also seen some fluids that say that they meet the requirements of both mercon and mercon v is it not recomended to use a universal fluid vs the correct one. whats the diff between them

When in doubt, use the fluid recommended by the manufacturer. Personally, I only trust Motorcraft. If you are only dropping the pan, put about 5 quarts back into the trans, start the engine, run through the gears while parked, and check the level. Keep adding until you are within the hash marks on the dipstick. The 4R70W usually only takes maybe 6 quarts, and the 4R100 around 7 to refill. Be sure to recheck the level after everything warms up and you have driven it. Good luck!
