4R70W or E4OD?

I have a 01 F-150 4x4 with the 5.4L. I have been reading threw some of the posts in here on trannys and opinions seem to differ. Some say the only choice for the 5.4L was the E4OD but I have seen conflicting statements. What's the best way to figure out which one it really is? I'm sure the pan on it will give it away right? Also, which transmission is better? I'm sure opinions will vary on that one, but I'd like to see what everyone thinks. Thanks!

The heavy duty E4OD was done in 98-99 when it was replaced with the very similar but beefed up 4R100. Both have the trans code E on the door jam sticker and 20 pan bolts.

The light duty 4R70w has a trans code of U and went into all the half tons after 98 with the exception of the Lightning and 7700.

The '01 F-150 4X4 and all others, excluding the Lightning, came with the 4R70 trans. There were no other options(except manual). The trans was built at either the Sharonville or Livonia trans plant. You can tell by looking at the case where the pan mounts. If it's from Sharonville you will see two square tab on each side. If it's from Livonia, you will see a half circle cut into these same 4 tabs. The half circle is where the robot at Livonia picks the cases up, Sharonville does not have the robot to load the empty cases. Every once in a while Livonia will get cases from Sharonville that have to be hand loaded, being the robot cannot pick them up, but it is quite rare. After 2004 they switched to the 4R75, but it's the same case and the parts are interchangeable.

I've got a '97 F150 with the E4OD (trans code E). Here is a pic of the pan. It is much larger then the 4r70....

97 and 98 had the red headed stepchild F250LD. Looked like a F150 but had a higher GWVR at 7700lbs due to beefier springs and seven lug wheels. Now in 99 the Superduty lineup of F-2/3/4/550 come out so the F250LD was rebadged as a F150 7700.

99 was also the intro of the new 4R100 in all the superdutys, lightnings, and 7700s. The debatable and fuzzy area is weather 99-03 F150s with the 5.4 got 4R100's over the 4R70w's. Still tryin to figure out the pattern of which did and why.
