Howdy and welcome!

It is common for the wire that comes out of the shifter tube to break or short out in the column. Take off the cover underneith and check it out. Might just be able to add some tape if the wire is still good.

Oh and 351 = sweet!

my wire is broke right at the base of the shifter. how do you get the shifter loose from the column to get to the wires?

There are three screws on the underside of the steering column. Remove them and take the plastic cover off. The wires usually break where they enter the shifter handle.
