transmission? / rearend?

Hello guys,
Looking for any info you can provide. I have a 2003 Supercrew, 4.6L. It iced here today, not sure what impact that could have, but first time the truck has been driven in icy conditions. Anyway, while driving home from work it seemed like the transmission was slipping. RPM's increase, but no power to wheels. This came and went a couple of times about a mile before i got home. The truck also made loud squealing noise, sort of like a squealing belt (metal on metal)?. Any thoughts....transmission, rearend maybe? No problems before this. Trying not to get taken too bad by the mechanic so any thoughts you have are much appreciated.

Thx!!!
