Slipping

I went hunting in my 1997 f150 w a 5.4 and a/t. Check engine light came on and then I noticed that It shifted very hard. Parked it and drove it about 3 mins. later and now the thing slips I believe. I will be driving in (D) and I will gas it ever so slightly and only my rpm's will go up, My truck doesn't gain any speed. My truck is now at the mountains about 75 miles away. Towing will be about $500.00 and I can't afford it. Do you think the tranny went out or?
Thank you for any help, Jason

Okay, I got it home. I scanned it with my scanner, and it read code 0500. My book tells me that it is the vehicle speed sensor fault. What does that mean?
Thanks, Jason

I think you got a speed sensor fault code because one sensor was telling the computer one speed, and the other speed sensor was telling the computer another speed. Internally your tranny is slipping and reducing the speed, but the computer is getting confused and it thinks you have something wrong with the speed sensor.
