auto transmission help

thanks for looking. I borrowed my Father's '97 f-150. its the edie bower 5.4L version. i was towing something, then returned the pick up to him. the next time i talked to him he said something was wrong with the tranny. i go to his house and take the truck for a drive, but it feels like the transmission pauses .5-1 seconds before enguaging each gear. i have never worked on this tranny before, so any kind of insight would be helpful. I deffinately didnt want to return the truck busted so i want to fix whatever is wrong with it. thanks

i had the same problem with mine. the transmissions were made to shift smoothly so people felt better about paying 40 grand for a truck. in the process of shifting smoothly the transmissions are self destructive because there is such a long space between shifts right from new, it's like riding the clutch on a standard transmission. there are clutches between gears that get worn out and if you pull the dipstick for the transmission you'll find tiny grey particles that are actually clutch material.

mine got to the point were it would rev right up to redline and not upshift unless i let off the gas pedal completely. some lucas transmission fix helped for a couple of months but it gradually got bad again. then i installed a b&m shift kit and the truck has shifted perfectly since then. that was almost 2 years ago. you can feel the truck shift now and it handles loads better and there is no pause between shifts.

it was well worth the $100 and 4 hours to install.

What did you tow?
How heavy was it?
Did you disengage the Over Drive while towing??

Sounds sort of the way my old 2000 with the 4.6 was acting before I traded it in. Of course i was hards on the truck only towed with it one time but I did jack rabit starts everytime i was first in line at traffic lights and did hard acelerations all time I guess after 96k miles of that kind of driving made the trany to act up and to either pay big bucks to fix it or pay big bucks for a new truck i chose to get a new truck.
