quit your whinin'

Whats up forum, I'm new here. I hate any noise coming from my drivetrain....The tranny in my '03 F150 whines occasionally, its noticable when first cranked and when accelerating. Its really noticable in traffic or cold mornings. Sometimes, when i come to a stop and go again it seems like the transmission lags and makes some kinda clunk noise, shifts out, then goes okay...shifting fine. it doesnt do it all the time. is this kind of thing normal for a '03 with 95K or should i expect some tranny repairs in the future? 2wd 4.6 w/ automatic. Thanks

Mine does somthing similar, the clunk noise that is. When slowing close to a stop, then hitting the throttle it will clunk when changing gears. Guess it's normal. Been doing that for the 6+ years (129,000 miles) I've owned it.

'97 F-250 LD, 5.4, 4x4, E4OD trans.

I must be from the old school world because all the complaints about the new F series I have always disregarded as truck characteristics.

Thats probably fine. I wouldnt worry about it. Its just your fluids getting warmed up.

I feel ya. Just drive it until the part breaks. Some of these kids spend 2 days a week trying to point out a noise or a squeak or a clunk to a dealer.

Drive a 78 and find out what a squeak or a clunk is.

Pass on any additives or snake oils or cures in a bottle. It's difficult to diagnose noises without actually hearing them, a whine could be something in one of the planetary gearsets or maybe the front pump itself. Do you hear the whine in all gears? Is it particularly louder in any specific gear?

No, its slightly audible during idle, and noticable through the gears. The only time i dont notice it is at cruising speed.

I'll bet with 95k on the odometer the tranny's never been serviced.I have a 98 with 83,000 on it and it's been done twice.I took it to my local dealer and had them change the fluid including purging the torque converter and doing a tranny flush then refill and they changed the tranny filter and cleaned the buildup of metal material (wich is normal) from the bottom of the pan and the magnet. My dad bought my truck brand new when I was a kid and I bought it from him when he felt it was time.I would get the tranny serviced and see how it goes. It's an inexpensive way to take extra special care of your Ford.

i've heard many times that the 4r70w needs a shift kit for a long life. the transmissions are setup with too much slip between shifts for a smooth ride which is also self destructive. mine used to clunk and not want to upshift at all when it was cold until i installed the shift kit. the transmission has worked perfectly since then.

I dropped the pan changed the filter and fluid, with no change. still whines. Sounds like a little car when its driving in reverse . I dont reckon a shift kit could solve whining, could it?

well, i dont understand it ya'll. I let my girlfriend drive the truck down the street so i could see how loud the noise is on the outside.....and all i heard was the good ol' exhaust and says she doesnt hear anything. I think I'll end this thread saying i'm 'mechanically paronoid' for lack of a better word.

Might be a front pump noise, who knows. Drive it 'till it blows up.
