I have a 92 f150, inline 6 engine, 5 speed manual transmission. It is starting to develop a whine. When the clutch is depressed, there is no whine.
Question #1 ... does anyone know what bearing this might be? is there a history of a particular bearing going out on this transmission? or am I simply looking at a complete rebuild?
I figure an oil change could not hurt, and might help a bit. Synthetic oil was recommended. I have seen several people recommend RedLine ATF here, but I live in a small town and have been unable to find it. So ...
Question #2 ... has anyone here had experience with Amsoil Universal Synthetic ATF, Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF (it says for Racing on the jug) or RedLine ATF? What is my best bet. (to me, the amsoil looked a little thinner in the jug than the mobil 1 did, not sure that matters though)
That sounds like a throw out bearing to me. If it has never been changed or if the clutch was serviced and the old bearing used that's definitely where I would start looking.

First do a easy fluid change, but it sounds like the throwout bearing is goin out. If you have only a 4x2, it isn't really a big deal to pull the tranny and change it. If a 4x4, a little more work.
can you tell where your whine is coming from?? I have a 5-spd as well, but mine is a 2001 4.2L. When the revs are up whether the clutch is depressed or not I can still here my whine. when i give it the gas, the whine gets louder. once the rpm's get down again, the whine goes very dull...but it's still there. this is my experience right now.
current mileage is 112000 KM....I had my entire clutch assembly replaced at 86000 KM. I think they changed the fluid then but I would have to check my bill. My whine is coming from the front of the engine....right by the pullies...if it's not the pullies, I will keep the transmission/clutch idea in mind.
i'm not great with the tranny info....but if the tranny is in neutral with the transmission in Neutral via the shifter....wouldn't that bypass the tranny and clutch?? I'm just asking cause i"m curious and dont know alot
taylor, I think you are hearing the clutch fan make noise. At least that would be my guess. If you are hearing it at the front of the engine. Other possiblities might be an accessory loosing its bearings ever so slowly.
Just a guess though.

Whats a kilometer??? hahahah
If the clutch pedal is out, the clutch disk is pressed against the flywheel and spinning the front half of the tranny. If the stick is in neutral the "front half" of the tranny isn't connected to the "back half" of the tranny which is hooked to the driveshaft.
I looked up symptoms for throwout bearing failure on the net. It sounds exactly opposite to what happens on mine.
My F150: The transmission whines when being driven. Depress the clutch, the whinning stops.
Internet Notes: Transmission whines when clutch is depressed.
Additional information: I was going down a hill the other day, by playing with the gas, and balancing the engine power and gravity pulling the truck down the hill, the whinning noise would stop.
One person asked if the transmission had work done on it lately, yes, clutch replaced about a year ago.
Oh well, I can't really complain ... the truck has 359,000 Km on it!

I took it to the dealership two weeks ago and they first said it was the alternator's bearings. they replaced the alternator under the ESP. still made the noise so then they replaced the top idler pulley and it's still making the noise. now they were saying it could the be either the tensioner pulley or the idler pulley on the bottom. I'm gonna try to change those first to see if that's the problem since they are the cheaper parts then stuff inside the tranny and clutch.
