Trouble with 1st gear

My truck is having issues. Anyway, I'm having trouble shifting into First. It goes but I have to force it almost all the time. Pumping the clutch has no effect. Most the other gears work alright but sometimes they stick when I try to shift Out of gear. Its a manual tranny. When I get frustrated at it; I just start off the line in second gear and avoid 1st all together. Unfortunately, I'm going four-wheeling this weekend and will be using the low gears a lot. Am I going to make anything worse by using the transmission in this state? Do you think it's the clutch at all? There's no sign of any clutch fluid leakage in the master or slave cylinders. Any comments would be appreciated.

If I were to guess and this would be a guess, I would look at the clutch. With that many years, there are probably a lot of miles on the clutch. Do you have trouble with reverse too? Classic signs of a worn out clutch are trouble with first and reverse. A fluid change is not a bad idea if you haven't done one in a while.

Good luck.

Another vote for check the clutch, sounds like it might not be fully releasing.
