Gear Swap

Next week I am putting in new gears. I have a 04 F150. I have 35x12.50 Toyo MT's on the truck with a 6" FabTech lift. I want to go with 4:56 gears, but the Guy who is going to do it says I'd be better off with 4:88's My question is will that be to high of a gear ratio for my truck. It is my wife's rig and it won't be seeing any off road action. I trust this guy as he has put gears in my jeep. He is very knowledgeable. Please advise me , it goes in on Tuesday the 31st . I want it right the first time. The more responses the better.
Thanks

4.56s will put you near factory performance. 4.88s will increase off the line quickness and towing/off-roading capability. The latter will be at the expense of highway mileage. Both ratios provide acceptable highway rpms.

Iam already getting bad mileage now running the stock gears. I do have a custom Troyer chip to install after the swap. Will that help out. I want to get it back up closer to where I was before all the mods. i relize that I won't ever be there with the mods. I get around 12-13 now. I do tow a jeep and, boat and camper with it.
Thanks

You're Welcome ! Your current setup can cause increased throttle use to meet demand; basically, dogging around. Either gear will improve this problem. The chip offers a number of improvements, but I've never attained more than a minuscule mpg increase.

Zapster-

The methodology for checking your transmission fluid level can be found in your owner's manual.

Exclamation

Zapster,
I want to take the time to thank you for making my post a chance to express your hate for Max. I asked a simple question to see if I could get some answers for my truck gear swap, but you chose to run your mouth and probably keeping me from helpful post with my question. I don't care if you can screw the top off a bottle and mig weld the cap back on...Take you lips and flap them somewhere else other than my post.......

haha wow... those two are more immature then me and im only 20! I have to give props to BOTH of them for completly avoicing this persons ? and probably having them lose tons of information on the subject just cuz ppl looked and saw a guy who cant back up stuff and someone who can tig weld a door handle on. by far that was the stupidest comment ever made on this forum "look at me i have way more car knowledge cuz i can weld" thats like saying im the worlds best swimmer cuz i can float on my back... it helps but it aint going to get you to the end man.

Getting in to an arguement on the net is like running in the special olympics. even if you win, you're still retarded

Oh ya and for my opinion i would run 4.56 gears... right now im getting decent milage with 33's and my stock 3.55 LS. i think going higher would drop ur mpg and u wouldnt need all that extra power off the bottom end unless u have a HUGE camper and even then it depends how much you tow it. I could be wrong but i would go with 4.56.

That was very possibly the stupidest thing I have ever come across on the world wide web. Anyone unfortunate enough to have wasted time reading through your technogarble is now less intelligent because of it, and I award you no points.

Seriously, though. About those gears. I'd like to know as well. Which set would actually get worse fuel mileage? The higher ratio (lower numerically) would require you to keep your foot into it more to achieve the same results, but the lower ratio would turn more rpm. What would the end result be comparing the two? How about fuel mileage in either one compared to the stock 3.55? Inquiring minds want to know.

well ti depends.. highway the higher (lower number) 4.56 will have less rpms at highway speed. but if u tow heavy loads or stay around town more.. that isnt going to really matter and you could just as well get the lower ( higher number) gears and it will help ur accel. as far as compared to a 3.55 i know your highway will decrease... i dont kno what rpms higher u will be but i would say u would drop at least 2 mpg-ish. in the city u might actually save .5 or so mpg just because your truck wont work as hard to get up to city speed with your stop and go driving.

I'm not required to answer questions. At most, you saw "didn't choose to answer", not "can't". Also, my personal information is of no concern to the insignificant.

zapster- Ranting is common in the emotionally impaired.
Others- This is a quote zapster makes corroborating my analysis:

i have to admit...it takes a lottoballzzz to discuss this here...i at times find myself dealing with the same symptoms...i blame it on too many hockey games(yes i was damn good) and i have been "hit on the head" too many times....but ...i try to not to let it bother me...it dont stop me from drumming(great therapy) and doing whatever i have to do to "get over it"...no.. no doctors..anything like that ...just what makes you happy will get you by...heal bro heal...zap!
