4WD shifting problem

Sometimes my 1999 F150 (auto trans) gets stuck in 4WD mode. the light on the dash will go off but it's obviously still in 4WD. what's going on here and what do i need to replace? What does it cost to replace?

I had a 97 that did that also. I just shifted into neutral and revved the engine a couple of times, that usually did it. If that didn't work I'd park it and turn the key off, then restart the truck. It only did it 3 or 4 times a year, so I never worried about it.

you might want to try and back up a couple of feet. sometimes that takes it out of 4wd.
