94 F150 4x4 E40D quits pulling at times?

I have a problem. Going down the road at any given time the tranny seems to just free wheel. It does not matter about time, temperature, speed, gear, load, or anything else. It just seems to have a mind of its own. It will free wheel for a couple of seconds and then it finds a gear and goes along fine. Would appreciate any incite. The tranny is pretty darn expensive and would like to try anything shy of a rebuild.

The Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) is probably on it's way out. It is mounted outside the transmission, on the driver's side, where the shifter cable attaches. Two bolts and one wire harness are all that is attaching it to the trans. Get a new sensor!
