2001 screw-no drive or overdrive(IDEAS)

I have a 2001 supercrew (auto transmission)with 88,000 miles, I had drove it about 30 miles or so and stopped for gas and when I pulled out it shifted from 1-2 with no problems but when it got to where it should hit drive it was like it was in N when the speed drops back down to around 20mph it shifts into second again til it gets back upto where it should shift into drive and then it does nothing again. I turn the overdrive off and it has no problems except it wont shift into drive. I called the dealership here and explained and they ask if the o/d light is flashing and at the time it wasn't, but before I got home it started blinking and when I called back they told me that could be good..., possible sensor or something.....I will be taking it tomorrow to see whats wrong, but any ideas before I get there. I have had no prior problems and there is no slipping or jerking at all...reverse, 1st, and 2nd shift and all are smooth..Any ideas what they will tell me and if it was the transmission whats the average price on a rebuild?

first off welcome to the site ..i'm not sure whats going on with the trans but i dont think it will require a rebuild..all of a sudden? my guess is that some sort of sender malfunction is happening and if everything else is find and dandy then the computer is not getting whatever it needs to make it go into drive...go to a good truck repair place and have them run the computer codes..they tell all...zap!

Thanks for the welcome, I didn't even know a site of this existed until my hours of seaching of what may have caused my problem...some how I ended up here, which I am glad I did....I have found lots of useful info already and sure they are tons more. I have added the site to my favorites...
I sure hope you are right on thinking it won't need a rebuild, I hope its something simple, easy, and halfway inexpensive....Its driving me nuts thinking about it. Thanks for the welcome and reply....

Just dropped off at dealership to get error code and all they said it showed was "Transmission Slippage", I left it with them waiting on a call to see what they have come up with....Hopefully something good...

Safe mode?

A lot of electronically controlled transmissions have a default safe mode they go into when an error code is tripped. In some instances, they just stay in 2nd or whatever.

Chrysler had a problem in its minivans when they went into "safe" mode (2nd gear) and the owners kept driving them (80 mph on the interstate).

It could just be a stray code, low fluid, a bad sensor, or something. Hopefully.

If that OD light starts flashing, take note.

Remodeling a late model transmission is the cheapest way to go and get a good unit. A OE replacement doesn't mean it has to have all updated components.
