I've been an F150 owner for 20 years, but I've just bought
a low mileage 96 with an auto trans. As I've never owned a
vehicle of any type with an automatic before, I'm covering
new territory here.
I'm very happy with the truck (4WD Eddie Bauer stretch cab w/302)
I'd noticed the shudder mentioned on the message board
so changed the fluid and that seems to be fixed now. Thanks for the advice guys, a very economical solution - 12 quarts Autozone house brand Mercon V - $35
However, I was hoping for the best, that it would fix the shift problem too. Alas - no cigar.
The shift problem - at least I think it's a problem, since I've been driving only stick shifts exclusively except on a rare out of town rental.
Seems when I am VERY easy on the throttle, everything is
OK. But if I hit it anywhere beyond 1/3 throttle it seems to wind up excessively before it shifts (all gears). If I punch it I have to back off to force the shift, out of fear I'm overrevving.
What are reasonable shift points? I don't have a tach, unfortunately, or that would tell me a lot.
Any ideas on what could cause this? A leaky vacuum line
or something simple I hope?
The truck has 90K on it, so unless it's been mistreated,
I don't think it's gonna be a worn out tranny.
Maybe I should just get a 5 speed and put in there and
be done with it!
