Speedo gear troubles

the speedo gear that runs on the shaft, held in by a steel ball bearing ball, and a clip seems to get hot and slip off over the steel ball, i changed my fluid hoping that the new fluid, which smelt better than the old (kinda burnt or just real old), would help some. the next time i went on the freeway for 15 mins the od light flashed like it did before i lost the speedo gear the last time. only this time i silicone it so it wouldnt come off as easy.

what would cause this gear to swell up and slide over that little ball? im clueless after ive tried to remedy it with what i can do.

I've never had that problem. I have to assume you are dealing with the transfer case or something because 4r70w speedo gears are not held onto the shaft with a ball they are mdae into the shaft.

Is the sensor binding? If it is the gear will not be allowed to turn freely and the friction builds up and melts the gear. If that checks out I would suspect that the drive gear on the output shaft is dirty and is casuing your problem.

i dont think the sensor binds, it snaps like its on a squared off roller or something with a teethed roller, not free wheeling. but it doesnt melt it, rather it gets hot, swells up and slips off until i put it back on w/ silicone

whoa now just because i said i siliconed it on there doesnt mean the problems fixed guys, its spit off a brand new gear within 2 weeks. i still want to remedy this.

JMC- what do you mean by binding? the sensor seems to have "clicks" it goes too, its not free wheeling like a bearing, does that matter?
