Question 4R70W, 94 F150 Shutter

Hello all. Before the question I just wanted to say that this has been a very informative site. Keep up the good work.

I have a 94 F-150 that has had a shutter for nearly 125,000 miles. The truck now has 175K on it. I bought the truck new and the shutter began around 38K. The transmiss has never been changed and the door jamb says it has a "U" type transmission; which I understand to be a 4R70W. I have read several of the posts on shutter and decided to replace the fluid with Mercon V. I did this last night. I dropped the pan, drained the torque converter, and replaced the filter. It seemed to correct the shutter in the lower gears but still has the shutter between 3-4. It doesn't seem as bad as it was but it is still there. I was wondering if it will take time for the shutter to go away completely. I did not add any type of additive after the fluid change. Are there any recommendations as to what additive (if any) I should use?

Thanks,
Keith

When they shudder for that many miles the torque converter clutch is damaged. New fluid won't fix it anymore, you need a new torque converter.

If the fluid is changed when the shudder begins it will usually avoid the clutch damage.

IMO all pre 95(and some 95's) torque converters are built damaged. They just weren't any good.

Thanks for the reply. That's not the only thing worn out on the truck! I have to say it did help the shifting dramatically, but not completely. I think i will probably fix it this summer by purchasing a NEW Ford F-150. I hope I can get as many miles out of the next one!

Thanks guys,

Keith
