No Reverse in '01 Screw - Forward Only With OD Engaged

Driving home this evening, my Screw seemed to slip out of gear completely during a moderate acceleration. I heard a fairly large clunk which coincided with this. It would not return to gear, and the only way I could proceed was to engage the OD. NO reverse gear with or without OD. When I got home about 2 miles later, I was able to drive at low speeds without OD engaged, but it was hesitant to shift , and then began to over rev. Still no reverse. There was no OD light flashing at any point, and the tranny has been flawless until today.

This is a 4X2, 2001 Supercrew, 5.4 with the tow package. It has 68,000 miles, and the tranny was last serviced at 32,000 miles, so I am a bit overdue. Anybody had any similar problems, or any suggestions?

E4od

I am having a similar problem with my '91 f-150 with E4OD. I have no forward or reverse unless the overdrive is turned off. However, when the overdrive is turned off, everything works fine. I tried testing/changing the relays in the engine compartment in the transmission relay box and it did not help. Off light does not flash. It also happened to me out of the blue while driving down the highway. When it happened the transmission purged about a quart or two of fluid out the dipstick tube, but when I checked the fluid level, it was perfect. I can rule out any computer problem because I have since put a new computer in (for a different reason) and the old computer & new did not put out any codes other than the EGR (which was disconected when headers were installed). I am really hoping this is simple as a wiring problem because the transmission only has a few thousand miles on a rebuild with transgo shift kit.

od

I believe I have finally found out what the problem is. It is the vehicle speed sensor. This controls the speedometer, odometer, cruise control, and overdrive. I was told this is most likely the problem by a shop foreman at ford. The part is $20.99 at oreilly auto parts, has a lifetime waranty, and takes about five minutes to change. Maybe this is your problem as well.

This might help

I have a 5.4L '04 Screw. Not too long ago I "thought" I lost my tranny. My friend is a ford mechanic, and it turns out there is a snap ring that holds the overdrive servo in place, due to heat and cooling that ring will become brittle and part of it will break off and drop down in the valve body. I bought a new snap ring for 3 dollars from the dealership, had to pull the pan and the valve body. When you do this you will need to look for the piece that broke, and put a new snap ring in. This took me about an hour and half to fix. However I had a truck hoist and all the right tools. The "quote" on the dealership doing it was around 1200... Might look into that.
