Transmission/Transfer Case Question

I have a 2000 4WD Lariat with 132,000 miles. I have lately been experiencing some concerns with what I thought might have been a transmission issue. But now, I am inclined to believe it might be an issue with the transfer case. Here is what I feel. The truck used to move at idle speed or on easy acceleration (700 to 800 rpm), but now it takes 1100 to 1200 to get it moving. If I turn the wheels all the way to the left or right, the vehicle will not move at an idle. It used to. If I let off the accelerator, I immediately start slowing down at a noticable clip. In the past, I could coast a long way before seeing a noticable decline in speed. I do not hear any noises that cause me any concern.

I have fully exchanged the transmission fluid three times (T-tech) in the life of this vehicle, at 40,000 mile intervals. I have new brakes (about a year old)

What can I do to determine if it is the transfer case with certainty? Is this a replace project, or a rebuild project? Is this a job for a Ford dealership, transmission shop or competent neighborhood garage?

I am getting ready to go out west for a hunting trip in April, and the last thing I need is a breakdown. Your input is greatly appreciated.

Zap...What engages then when you flip the switch? Is it all gear driven?

In the newer GM NV cases there is a clutch pack but it almost never wears out. I'm not sure about the fords never had one apart. GM had a problem with the fluid they were using for a while which caused a "slip-stick condition" that was solved by adding a friction modifier to the fluid. Not sure about the ford but I don't think it's the tcase.

yes...well...errrrr i'm not sure..do you have on the fly 4X4?..if you do then i'm not sure..in every truck i owned i had the 4X4 shifter coming out of the floor...and you need to be in park to engage it..thats a gear/chain driven transfer case so there are no clutches in there...i can push the shifter OUT of 4X4 while driving..but you have to stop and be in park to engage..if not MAJOR grinding noises WILL happen...zap!
