Thumbs up attention: Alan/ dirtydog

Alan, u were right about my f150 having the 4r70w. i found out where the code was and what it means. but u were wrong about the tranny in our 1998 4.6liter f250 light duty- the trans code for that also says "U". Which means 4r70w if i am not mistaken.

Has this tranny been improved any since 98? this truck only has 45,000 miles on it- but if u know anything about farm trucks u know that u have to multiply whats on the odometer by 2 or 3 times.

U said this tranny isnt very good for heavy towing? What would u consider to be heavy? this truck routinely tows over 10,000 pounds at speeds up to 30-35 miles per hr. And at slower speeds through rough pastures and fields- carrying hay and forage and, well u get the picture. We do have a cusion- eez bumper/hitch on this truck tho- dont know if that will help tranny longevity or not?

Your comments and expertise are greatly appreciated.

Dan.

yeah pre 2000 trucks were hard to figure out which trans they have. If you don't rev the heck out of it you should do ok. Don't treat it like those old 4spds that you could make do whatever you want. Yes the transmission have been upgraded since 98, but you have most of the good stuff you should be okay. Make sure you put a cooler on it and service it often.

yeah, the problem is its my dads truck and although our farm equipment is serviced right on time- the truck gets neglected sometimes. I plan on taking better care of my 2003

it has a cooler on it from the factory. I beleive the fluid was changed at 15k but could definetely use it again by now.

Are 5.4's harder on this tranny? When u say dont rev it too much i assume u mean while towing? I dont think either of these trucks have been over 4000 rpm. i know i keep mine below 3500 and below 2500 most of the time.- uses enough gas as is, lol. i lead footed it a little at first to break in of course, lol.

Thanks,

Dan.

I was thinking more of the getting stuck in the mud revs. They can destroy a good intermediate clutch.
