Question 2003 transmissions?

Do the 2003 f-150's with the 5.4 liter and towing package have the better 4r100 tranny i have been reading about here?

Also- does anyone know what tranny a 98 f-250 light duty would have in it with the 4.6 liter? That is our main farm work truck and has done alot of heavy duty towing and hauling work with no tranny problems this far.

It may seem a bit odd but your 150 has the 4r100, while the 250 LD has the 4r70w.
Note that a 150 with the 5.4 could, under some conditions such as without the towing package, also have the 4r70w.

Most 5.4 f-150's have 4r70w transmissions. It is possible for you have a 4r100 in your f-150 but highly unlikely. All f-250 trucks had 4r100 transmissions.

so how well does the 4r70w hold up then? is it a good tranny? Has it been improved any over the years?

The 4r70w is a good transmission however it is not that great for heavy towing, it just isn't big enough for that. It has been revised many times over the years and has now evolved into a 4r75w transmission. The early units had so many problems you can't even build a good transmission from them. 98 up transmissions are far superior.
