Question How Many Shift Solenoids in 4R70W?

I've recently noticed a "cluck" sound coming from the rear of the truck. I greased the slip-yoke. When I accelerate, I notice a hesitation at first then engaugement. I've replaced the differnential gear oil with Amsoil and 4oz. of Limited slip additive 5k miles ago.

I used my AutoTap (Ford Enhanced Version) software connected to the OBDII port and checked the transmission solenoids. Sometimes one is on, two and three are off, then one is off and two is on, or one and two are on and three is ALWAYS off. Is there a problem with the solenoid, connector, cable, sensor, or some other reason for solenoid not to be ON at all?

Thanks!

There are two shift solenoids, one pressure control solenoid, and one torque converter clutch solenoid.

If you don't have any transmission code indicating a fault then your good to go.
The PCM looks at the solenoid voltage, currents , shift sequence and can logic when there is a fault by comparison, to what it knows is correct operation. It's that good.

Thanks guys,

Have you ever heard of replacing them after 75K miles for any reason. I think the transmission is slipping at WOT, but then again I'm supercharged. I do have a Transgo shift kit too.

Don't forget about the TOT. Transmission Oil Temperature. In 98 it became integrated into the wiring board. The pre 98 units actually had wires.
