Unhappy 1997 F150 4x4 Lariat OD light flashing code P0503

Just started today, I notice the OD is flashing and I take it to get the codes checked out and the scanner shoots out a:

P0503 : VSS Intermittent

Whatever that means

I notice nothing really wrong, aside from the darn light flashing.

Did it to me twice today when I started going 70 MPH

Also this is my only means of transportation, can I drive around with this problem?

Any ideas or help would be apreciated, especially on how to fix it

That means that the signal from the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is noisy. It could be a bad VSS or a wiring problem to the VSS.

Well it seems like it was the VSS in the tranny.

I went to the dealer and bought the one for the tranny, installed it and went on a 20+ mile highway trip, no more flashing OD light.

I'm so relieved it was something simple for a change.
