Won't accelerate at WOT - Please help.

If I'm traveling along, say 55 mph, and I punch it; the rpms jump up to about 4000 but the mph stays the same. Actually the mph may very gradually increase but not much at all. I have to let off the gas so that it will shift back up to be able to then apply gas gradually if i want to speed up. Please help.

Oh yeh, 2001 F150 185,000 miles.

The transmission is slipping. At 185k just junk that tranny and get a new one.

but it only does it when i punch it. is this still considered slipping and time to junk it? come on man tell me it's the torque converter, or a sticking valve, or a electric shift solenoid, but not junk it...

Do I have to lie to you?
It only slips when you punch it because that is when you put more power to it than it can take. When these converters fail they either grenade(no movement scrap through the trans) or they just burn the converter clutch up. Yes I think your converter is bad ,but that is not your only issue. If a valve is sticking it is caused by all the material in the fluid. Same goes for the solenoid(which is not your problem) If you doubt what I say drop the pan and cut the filter open.

wow your tranny lasted 185k...thats great! my old dodge durango 1999 (POS that it is) only lasted up to 100k....

be glad it lasted that long and change it with a smile!

that is why i am glad they are moving over to these CVT tranny's ...they sound better, but i am eager to see how long they last.

but from the obvious they seem to last longer cause they will be doing less shifting, which causes less wear and tear..but im no mechanic, so maybe an expert will know more about the new CVT

I am not very knowledgeable on the CVT yet ,but I know it doesn't ever really shift. It just adjusts. I live in Batavia and have quite a few friends working in the plant.
